Weymouth, UK – The International WASZP Games, set to take place in the world-renowned sailing venue of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, has reached an incredible milestone with 190 entries recorded within the first 24 hours of registration.
This remarkable response underscores the continued global appeal of the WASZP class, which has solidified its reputation as one of the most accessible and exciting foiling classes in the world. With sailors from across the globe converging on Weymouth, the 2025 event is shaping up to be the largest and most competitive in the history of the WASZP Games. With no cap on entries for the International Games, WASZP expects entries to surge past 250 and head towards 300, making this the biggest foiling dinghy event in history, it will be something to savour and there is simply no better time to get a WASZP and get be part of this massive bucket list event.
Weymouth as a venue is simply sensational, with the inner harbour courses providing flat water opportunities and the reason it has been renamed “foil town” in recent times. The facilities, rigging and launching areas are legacy items from the 2012 Olympic Games, which provided an unparalleled sailing and fan experience. Something WASZP will be working to emulate by providing great on and off-water options for competitors, families and friends. Needless to say, with 250+ competitors, it will be one heck of a party!
A Global Celebration of WASZP
The International WASZP Games is a cornerstone event for the class, bringing together a diverse fleet of sailors of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. There are already more than 40 Women entered for the event, with that number set to double by the time the event kicks off. There are 18 countries currently represented, with around 25 nations expected to attend. From young rising stars heading towards SailGP, the America’s Cup or Olympic Sailing, to seasoned veterans and world champions from other classes, the Games offers a great level playing field for everyone. Another key point is the growing masters/super masters contingent, with already 25 entries in this division and also expected to double.
There is no doubt the WASZP Games is the proving ground for our next generation of stars, you only need to look at the WASZP Hall of Fame to see the impact the WASZP is having on the sport.
Anticipation Builds for 2025
The unprecedented surge in registrations reflects the WASZP class’s exponential growth and the popularity of its unique one-design platform. Not only has the Games taken off at record speed, but the lead up events are also receiving a boost. Foiling Week Pensacola (Home of the 2026 WASZP Games) is also surging toward 50 entries and will already break North American records. There is no doubting the impact the WASZP is having in the sailing ecosystem. Innovations such as the newly released rudder foil and restructured partnerships with major sailing organisations like SailGP have amplified the class’s appeal, bringing more sailors into the fold and elevating competition to new heights. Not to mention the collaboration with World Sailing set to deliver some exciting new developments at the grass roots and federation level of the sport.
Martin Evans, Global Class Manager for WASZP, expressed his excitement about the response:
“The speed and volume of entries for the 2025 Games is incredible and a testament to the strength of our global WASZP community. We had similar take up at both Foiling Week in Garda and the 2024 Games in Norway, but these events had capacity limits. With no capacity limit in Weymouth, we are going to be able to put on one amazing show! Weymouth is a dream venue, and this record turnout promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
