The WASZP WA Championships showcased exactly why Western Australia is considered one of the best foiling destinations in the world. With perfect breeze, flat Swan River water and top-tier competition, the fleet enjoyed two action-packed events: the WA Sprint Championships and the WA State Championships. Perth once again delivered conditions that are the envy of foiling sailors globally.
Many still remember the iconic 2019 WASZP Games held on the Swan River—bright skies, thermal winds and flawless racing. Last weekend served up those same postcard conditions as WA’s WASZP fleet came together for a massive double-header.

Fast Foiling at the WA Sprint Championships
The weekend opened with the Sprint Championships, where flat water and 18 knots of breeze created textbook WASZP racing conditions. Issac Biczo reported:
“Flat water, 18 knots and heaps of action—classic Swan River racing. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club was the perfect host, giving everyone a fantastic time on and off the water. After racing, the whole group came together for food, drinks and story-sharing.”
A highlight was the Slalom format, with seven rapid-fire races completed. The tight, dynamic Slalom course suits the WASZP perfectly and provided exciting moments across the fleet.
The overall result came down to the final race, with Matt Currell taking a breakthrough win after major improvement over the last season. Super-Master legend Brad Devine also made a welcome return to racing after time away from the class.

Classic Sea Breeze Racing at the WA State Championships
Following the Sprints, the fleet shifted straight into the State Championships, where the Swan River delivered its famous southwesterly sea breeze on both days.
Day one brought a steadily building breeze from 12 to 20 knots—perfect for high-intensity foiling and testing the sailors’ endurance. Day two began with a fading easterly, prompting a smart AP from the Race Officer. True to the inclusive WASZP culture, sailors used the downtime for rigging tweaks, repairs and sharing tuning knowledge.
When the breeze returned in the afternoon, the river lit up again with 15–18 knots of pristine foiling conditions. Eight races were completed across the championship, with tight battles throughout the fleet.
It was also great to see former sailors jumping back into the boat. The WASZP community is known for welcoming returning competitors, and the supportive environment continues to strengthen the fleet in Western Australia.
